Thank you so much! Honestly, everything I want is to just be able to write like this and have people read it and enjoy it, so you're already making it happen. I hope you have the best day. You definitely made mine. ❤️
Marissa, I don’t know whether to salute you, hire you, or sit next to you on a porch with a boxed wine and a megaphone. I’m Kelly - burned out after 25 years in change consulting, early retired at 53, and now slow traveling the world with my British husband (he’s adorable, but not the point here).
This essay? I laughed. I winced. I related in a too-close-to-the-bone kind of way. Especially the fake-it-till-you-make-it mantra - I once had to Google “basis points” after accepting a role running a business planning team. Still not sure I could explain them to anyone.
Anyway, I left corporate America because my skillset was being slowly boiled down to slide decks and soul sap. I’ve never written a résumé either. I just changed lives, companies, sometimes entire systems - and now I write about what all that almost cost me.
Rooted might speak to you:
Retired, Roaming and Rooted. Welcome to My Second Chapter
You’re a damn good writer. Keep talking your way in. The world needs more of that voice.
Kelly! Thank you for this wonderfully thoughtful note. I’ve had a truly shitty week beyond job insecurity or my dog getting skunked last night at 2AM lol, so this really made my day. And fuck yeah adorable British husband!!!
It may not work out IN THE MOMENT. But persistence will be rewarded, somehow, some way, maybe not exactly how you expect it or want it. This sounds trite, but keep your head up and your eyes open to see the next opportunity. You got this.
Truly, such a treat to read great writing by an actual human. Hope you get everything you want and more, Marissa.
